This book was my first foray into the world of nonfiction writing for young readers. World War II--what an overwhelming topic to begin with!
I went in to the assignment thinking I had a pretty solid understanding of the Second World War. I left it marveling at the depth of my misunderstanding of countless aspects of the conflict.
I have read countless nonfiction books about World War II virtually all of my adult life. I have watched documentaries about World War II. I have watched Hollywood movies about World War II, many based the on real events. So I came to this subject with what I believed was a more-than-average grasp of the major issues of the war.
And that was an accurate assessment. But writing this book taught me an important lesson. It's one thing to know bits and pieces of a story, and another thing altogether to know the entire tale, start to finish, front to back. In its entirety, World War II is a whale of a tale, to say the least.
I'm very proud of this book. It provides a respectable overview of a conflict that is nearly impossible to fathom in all its myriad complexities. It is intended for readers ages 12 to 15, but anyone can read this book and come away with a good basic understanding of the war.
You can find World War II: From the Rise of the Nazi Party to the Dropping of the Atomic Bomb on Amazon and at Nomad Publications.
